Keeping Secrets

CA$3,000.00

Keeping Secrets / acrylic and vintage wallpaper on panel / 36”H x 24”W x 1.5”D / 2026

From my continuing series of ‘Dress/Alice in Wonderland’ paintings, this work was inspired by the very controversial John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) “The Portrait of Madame X”, premiered in 1884.

On account of the perceived blatant sexuality and alleged looseness of the model, Virginie Gautreau, the portrait almost ruined the reputation of both the muse and the artist. More-so as her right shoulder strap was was originally painted down. Upon public reception, Sargent scraped off the strap and re-painted it up, to match her left shoulder strap. I decided it was about time to put the strap down, as originally intended in my painting.

This painting took me the better part of 45 hours to complete.
